Para melhor entendimento do Gestaltismo (ou Gestalt) , que irei explicar no post seguinte, é necessário, em primeiro lugar, obter uma compreensão básica dos elementos básicos da comunicação visual. O gestaltismo é uma das teorias de percepção visual da forma e, como tal, conhecer estes elementos é um primeiro passo para a compreensão do universo da comunicação visual.
Segundo Dondis (1973), os elementos básicos são 10. Não obstante o seu número reduzido, Dondis declara que “they comprise the raw material of all visual information in selective choices and combinations” (página 39), ou seja, apesar de serem poucos, estes englobam todo o material “cru”, por assim dizer, da informação visual em combinações e escolhas selectivas.
Estes 10 elementos são: o ponto, a linha, a forma, a direcção, o tom, a cor, a textura, a dimensão, a escala e o movimento. Seguem-se algumas frases de Dondis, caracterizadoras de cada elemento.
- A linha – “When the dots are so close to one another that they cannot be individually recognized, the sensation of direction is increased, and the chain of dots becomes another distinctive visual element, a line." (página 42)
- A forma – “Line describes shape.” (página 44)
- A direcção – “Every basic shape expresses three basic and meaningful visual directions: the square, the horizontal and the vertical.” ´(página 46)
- O tom – “The world we live in is dimensional, and tone is one of the visualizer’s best tools for indicating and expressing those dimensions.” (página 48)
- A cor – “Color is, in fact, loaded with information and one of the most pervasive visual experiences we all have in common.” (página 50)
- A textura – “Texture has reference to a composition of a substance through minute variations on the surface of the material.” (página 55)
-A dimensão – “Representation of a dimension in two-dimensional visual formats is also dependent on illusion. Dimension exists in the real world.” (página 59)
- A escala – “All visual elements have the capacity to modify and define each other. The process, itself, is the element of scale.” (página 56)
- O movimento – “The visual element of movement, like dimension, is more often implied in the visual mode than actually expressed. Yet movement is probably one of the most dominant visual forces in human experience.” (página 64)
